Regular
breast self examination is vitally important for early detection
of breast cancer – the commonest form of cancer in women.
Use the tips and flats of the fingers to feel all the way around
the breast in a spiral from the edge to the nipple. Squeeze
the nipple to check for discharge.

In
the mirror compare the two breasts, with your arms by your sides;
then with your arms raised above your head. |

Lying
on your back, put your hand behind your head. Use the other hand
to check the armpit and the breast. |

In
the shower, soapy hands glide over the breast so you can feel
the texture of the underlying breast easily. |
What
changes should I look for ? |
| Appearance:
Any change in outline or shape – especially if caused by arm
movement or lifting the breast. Puckering or dimpling of the skin. |
| Feelings:
Discomfort or pain in one breast that is different from usual –
especially if new and persistent. |
| Lumps:
Any lumps, thickening or bumpy areas in one breast or armpit which
seem to be different from the same part of the other breast or armpit
– especially if these changes are new. |
| Nipple
change: Discharge which is new for you, bleeding or reddish
areas which don’t heal easily. Any change in position of the
nipple, – for example pulled in or pointing differently. Any
rash on or around the nipple. |

Please
note: Official UK medical advice focuses on breast awareness rather
than regular self examination, while in the USA health professionals
promote regular self examination. Self examination should not
replace regular check up with your Doctor or other Registered
Health Professional. The above information is only a guide, you
should consult your Doctor/Registered Health Professional ASAP
for further advice or if you notice any changes in your breast
area.
